Here’s what you need to know about Redistricting in Fresno:
Fresno County supervisors support new district map drawn by conservative strategist: The majority of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors put its support behind a new county district map that detractors called a “status quo” map drawn by a conservative political operative. The map, which is called Public 101b, was drawn by a coalition headed by Alex Tavlian, who worked for Rep. David Valadao, R-Hanford, and runs a conservative news outlet called The San Joaquin Valley Sun. Read more in the Fresno Bee.
Fresno residents share opinions, ideas at City Council’s redistricting meeting
Redistricting is in full swing, and residents of the City of Fresno are making their voices heard by sharing their own draft maps – and so is CNC! Along with the Fresno Inclusive Families Coalition, we submitted maps that keep our Communities of Interest whole. Check out some coverage of our map on CBS 47!
Thanks to the FAIR MAPS Act, Communities of Interest are supposed to be kept whole throughout the redistricting process. But are incumbent Fresno councilmembers protected from being drawn out of their own district? Despite language in the city charter and advice received from their consultant, the answer experts told GV Wire is “no.” Read more about Fresno’s city charter, the FAIR MAPS Act, and what that means for Fresno.
Did you hear? In case you didn’t – The COVID-19 vaccine is now available for children ages 5 through 11! Here’s what you need to know about the vaccine for this age group:
- The vaccine is safe and 91% effective
- Children ages 5-11 receive a lower dose than the adult vaccine
- The vaccine is administered in 2 doses, 3 weeks apart
- The distribution roll-out will start in some places as early as today (check-in with your child’s doctor to see if they have any shots!), but will be more widely available next week
- Vaccination, along with other preventive measures, can protect children from COVID-19 and help us build our immunity as a neighborhood

Proposed Fresno County Redistricting Maps Violate State Law
More on Fresno Redistricting: Fresno County’s three selected draft maps divide families and split Communities of Interest (COI), violating California’s state law just weeks away from the conclusion of the redistricting process. The Fresno Inclusive Families Coalition, which CNC is a part of, sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors regarding this issue. CNC and Power California just held an informative virtual community workshop in Merced, all about the basics of redistricting! The zoom meeting was jam-packed with local residents, all learning about the redistricting process in Merced from CNC and Power California organizers, followed by breakout sessions where Communities of Interest were discussed. We can’t wait to get more involved in this process to create maps that give Merced residents the representation they deserve.
